別府を拠点に活動している、または将来的に別府を活動拠点とすることに興味を持っている全国のクリエイター、アーティスト、団体・企業を対象に、展示室での企画を募集する「別府市創造交流発信拠点『TRANSIT』企画公募」。令和６年度第３弾企画として、別府在住のアーティスト・桑原ひな乃による展覧会『海を彫る 海を刻む｜carve the sea』を開催します。

【企画者】
桑原ひな乃
1997年大分県生まれ・在住。2019年京都造形芸術大学美術工芸学科卒業。高出力の電気スパークにより鉄を溶かす溶接機で溶接しながら造形している。日々の記憶を刻むように進める制作プロセスから不可視の時間やエネルギーの可視化 (彫刻化) を試みる。主な展覧会に、2023年『Art Fair Beppu 2023』(旧フェリーさんふらわあ乗り場、大分)、『TANGA Night Museum』(丹賀砲台園地、大分)、2022年『育波芸術祭』(五斗長垣内遺跡、淡路島)、2021年『soft heavy』(Blend studio、大阪)、2019年『KUAD ANNUAL 2019 宇宙船地球号』(東京都美術館、東京)、2017年『ULTRA GLOBAL AWARD 2017 Exhibition 新しい泉のための錬金術ー作ること作らないこと』(ギャルリオーブ、京都) など。2019年には、スターバックスコーヒー別府公園店に作品が恒久設置された。

【展覧会について】
漁師町出身の私は、実家の前にある港で錆びた錨や繋船柱、鎖など金属製の道具を日常的に見ながら育った。ものにあるさまざまな痕跡を観察することで、そこ宿る記憶や人間の営み、時間の蓄積を感じとり、私の彫刻もものに宿る不可視の時間やエネルギーの可視化を試みたものである。
今回の個展『海を彫る 海を刻む｜carve the sea』では、大分県佐伯市鶴見で水産業を営んできた祖父、桑原 徳三郎の銅像をめぐり、その場所の記憶を掘り下げるためのリサーチや、新たに彫刻を作ることをおこなってきた。現在、銅像がある場所はかつて祖父や家族が桑原水産を営んでいた場所である。祖父は私が生まれる前に亡くなり、私が生まれたのと同時期に銅像となったらしい。そして私が成長していくにつれて、地球温暖化や少子高齢化、近代化に伴う日本の産業構造の変化のため銅像の周りにある仕事場や家は取り壊されていく。今は銅像のみが残り、更地となっている。私は、銅像とは記憶の風化を恐れ、その場に何があったのかを伝え残そうとするために建てられるものと捉え、２つの視点で空間を構成した。
１つはその場所・記憶と向き合うため、昔の写真や映像、桑原家の歴史についての伝記、家族との対話を通して、沈んだ記憶を掘り下げるようにリサーチをする。
もう１つは祖父の銅像を塑像して、溶けた鉄を少しずつ積み重ねながら造形し、新たに時を刻むように制作する。
どちらも「彫刻的」な行為であり、私の記憶の中の実態のない祖父が徐々に形作られていく感覚を覚えた。私は展示空間を通して銅像、もとい「彫刻」から、確かにそこに存在していた記憶の場の形成を図る。

I grew up in the fishing village, seeing metal tools such as rusted anchors, tethers, chains, on a daily basis at the port in front of my parents’ house. By observing the many different traces, I sensed the memories, human activities, and accumulation of time that reside there, and I also attempt to visualize the invisible time and energy that dwell in things through my sculpture.
In this solo exhibition “Carving the Sea”, we explored the bronze statue of Tokusaburo Kuwabara, my grandfather who ran a fishing industry in Tsurumi, Saeki City, Oita Prefecture, and did conduct research to dig into the memories of that place and created new sculptures. I’ve been there. The current location of the statue is where his grandfather and his family once operated Kuwabara Suisan. My grandfather passed away before I was born, and apparently he was made into a bronze statue around the same time I was born. As I grew up, the workplaces and houses around the statue were broken down due to changes in Japan’s industrial structure along with global warming, the declining birthrate and aging population, and modernization. Now only the bronze statue remains to get a vacant lot around there.
In fear of memory fading, I viewed the bronze statue as something that was erected in order to communicate and preserve what had happened at a certain place, and I constructed the space from two perspectives. First, in order to face the place and its memories, we conducted research to dig into the memories through old photographs and videos, biographies about the history of the Kuwabara family, through conversations with my family . The other is for molding the bronze statue of my grandfather, which formed by building up pieces of molten iron little by little, to create a new way to mark time. Both were sculptural acts, and I felt that my grandfather, who had no real presence in my memory, was being gradually created.
Through the exhibition space, I attempt to form a place of memory that certainly existed there from the statues, more exactly, the “sculpture”.
